The natural urban grown of Wincanton
West Wincanton can provide a distinctive and sustainable development that responds positively to its physical and ecological context in delivering residential and employment growth together with education and community facilities all within a network of green infrastructure that supports the town of Wincanton.
Wincanton is growing. Like everywhere else, people here need more houses, jobs and services. Wincanton is well placed to grow – it is one of South Somerset’s main towns with a good range of employment, shops and facilities. The town should grow in the best way possible.
The local distinctiveness of Wincanton is defined by its hillside location, and how built form, gardens and parks respond to the significant changes in topography. The historical core of the town is perched on the eastern and southern sides of the River Cale, which flows south through a narrow valley on the edge of the escarpment.
This comprehensively designed development could provide around 650 market and affordable houses, with a primary school, a community hub and employment space within an extensive network of green corridors and spaces. It would be a well-connected extension of the market town of Wincanton, carrying forward the best aspects of the town’s character, designed to the highest standards and incorporating progressive principles of sustainable development. It could be a natural part of Wincanton and become something that Wincanton can be proud of.
