Residential courtyards within a Conservation Area
Origin3 was instructed to prepare a design guide, establishing a clear framework for the development of 9 self-build homes within a sensitive conservation area. Through guidelines and plot parameters checklists the guide defines layout, massing, and character of the site while allowing flexibility for individual internal designs.
The proposal will replace the existing industrial and agricultural buildings on the Mendip Garage parcel and the bungalow and outbuildings on the Garndiffaith with 9 new self-build residential dwellings.
Inspired by the composition of traditional vernacular farmsteads found throughout Blagdon and the surrounding villages, the layout of the proposal will feature wide frontage formal houses creating the principal elevation facing Street End behind which is formed a courtyard arrangement enclosed by clusters of residential barns.
The overall position and massing of the dwellings will be fixed, along with the plot structure and general locations of window apertures within the building form, with the self-build elements of the design focusing on the internal layouts of the dwellings.
