From brownfield to benchmark
Knowle Hill is a six home development showcasing, environmentally led design through transformation of an abandoned water treatment works
The project aims to transform the long-abandoned Royal Ordnance Facility water treatment works, a brownfield site left unused for over 14 years, into a vibrant, low-carbon residential enclave seamlessly integrated into the natural landscape along the Knowle Hill ridge.
The development prioritises passive design principles to maximise energy efficiency, significantly reducing the need for external energy sources. A variety of renewable energy systems will be employed, further enhancing its eco-friendly footprint. In a thoughtful approach to sustainability, the design limits the environmental impact by utilising the footprint of the existing buildings set for demolition. Materials from the original structures will be recycled and repurposed for the new development, promoting resource conservation.
To harmonise with the natural landscape, the homes are strategically designed to sit low within the terrain, resembling clusters of traditional farm buildings that blend seamlessly into their surroundings. This integration not only preserves the beauty of the landscape but also serves as a model of environmentally conscious living, raising the standard of design for the entire region.
